The Training Program in Genetics is committed to not only recruiting students from diverse backgrounds, but also building inclusive and supportive spaces within our program and the broader scientific community at Yale to ensure their safety and success throughout their graduate training.
Many TPG trainees are actively involved in these efforts, in part through the following groups:
Yale BBS Diversity and Inclusion Collective (YBDIC) - “YBDIC is committed to fostering the intellectual and personal growth of underrepresented minority (URM) students in the BBS. Our central mission focuses on a four-pronged approach: engagement, empowerment, outreach, and advancement.”
Yale Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (YSACNAS) - the Yale chapter of the national SACNAS organization, which supports Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in achieving success in STEM.
Women in Science at Yale (WISAY) - a group of undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs that advocates for gender equity in STEM and promotes female, transgender, and non-binary scientists.
Graduate Student Assembly (GSA) and Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) - these groups represent graduate and professional students to the administration, and provide resources to student groups and information about how to navigate life at Yale.
The Science, Technology and Research Scholars Program (STARS) - this division of Yale College Dean’s Office supports women, minority, economically underprivileged, and other historically underrepresented undergraduate students in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) - the Yale chapter of the national oSTEM society, which is dedicated to educating and fostering leadership for LGBTQ+ communities in the STEM fields.
Office for Graduate Student Development & Diversity (OGSDD) - housed within the McDougal Graduate Student Center, this office works collaboratively and proactively with departments and programs to recruit and support the needs of diverse students as they pursue graduate study at Yale.
Academic Strategies Program - housed within the Poorvu Center for Teaching and learning, this program helps students learn how to navigate the “hidden curriculum” of Yale so they can take ownership of their academic development.
Various diversity- or climate-focused committees within the departments of Genetics, MCDB, and EEB.
